Project Right Start

Teacher Training for Balwadi and Primary School Teachers- PhaseI

Asha Chennai Proposal – New Project- Year 2003

17th April 2003

Background:

This project proposal is retrospective in that Asha-Chennai already received US $1000 toward training of teachers associated with Seva Chakra. However because of several problems that money was not utilized towards that purpose. This project proposal is towards using that US $1000 for teacher training towards other Asha-Chennai projects.

Several new Asha-Chennai projects are planned to start with the 2003-2004 academic year. Most of the projects involve schools where the teachers require training. The teachers are often qualified from an educational standpoint. However they lack in terms of knowledge of good education methods specifically targeted towards young children.

Instead of having different training sessions, one for each project, it would make sense to combine these into couple of training sessions, one for Balwadi teachers and another for Primary School teachers. Besides lowering the cost of running these sessions, combining these would also bring in interaction between teachers spread across several districts of Tamilnadu. This would help them and us to understand the complexities that exist at the ground in the different areas of the state.

The education training for Primary school teachers would be for one week (i.e. 6 days) and would include the following sessions: (1session will be ˝ day)

·         1 Introductory session – a ppt with discussions on

0bjectives of the training programme, expected outcomes in terms of skills and attitude development for the participants, time and materials management, teaching aids, pacing of the curriculum,  - Lakshmi Suryanarayanan + Vishnupriya

·         3 sessions-Primary curriculum- objectives, evaluation tools, multigrade classrooms, importance of reading, choosing right reading material for the children. - Dr. Saraswati , Mrs P. Saraswathi,  Vishnupriya

·         1 session- role of story telling and singing in primary classrooms- Shobha Viswanath from Karadi Tales/ resource person from Chathnath Trust/ resource person from State Resource Centre/ Lalitha from Madras Choir Group

·         4 sessions of Practical work and discussion- How to create “a child friendly environment for child centred learning” - on what to use as teaching aids, to actually help creating child friendly learning-teaching material from inexpensive materials (these to be taken back by the participants), on how to use these materials, how to involve children in the making and use of l-t materials- Shanthi Badrinarayanan , Lakshmi B, Rajarajeswari, (teachers of Omhs), Vishnupriya

·         1 discussion session on the “Rights of the Child” - Kamala Devi, Poornima  (Omhs) , Vishnupriya

·         2 Final session- mock /real classroom presentations by teachers using their own material and feedback- observation and evaluation - Lakshmi, Shanthi, Vishnupriya, representatives of participant projects

The education training for the Balwadi teachers would be for one week (i.e. 5 days) and would include the following sessions:

·         1 Introductory session –

0bjectives of the training programme, expected outcomes in terms of skills and attitude development for the participants, materials management, role of nutrition in child development   - Lakshmi Suryanarayanan + Vishnupriya

·         2 session-visit to preschool centers with child friendly practices

·         4 sessions of Practical work and discussion- How to create “a child friendly environment for child centred learning” - to actually help creating child friendly learning-teaching material from inexpensive materials (these to be taken back by the participants), on how to use these materials, how to involve children in the making and use of l-t materials- Shanthi Badrinarayanan , Chitra Mani Vishnupriya

·         1 session- role of story telling and singing in primary classrooms- Shobha Viswanath from Karadi Tales/ resource person from Chathnath Trust/ resource person from State Resource Centre/ Lalitha from Madras Choir Group

·         1 discussion session on the “Rights of the Child” - Kamala Devi, Poornima  (Omhs) , Vishnupriya

·         1 Final session- mock /real classroom presentations by teachers using their own material and feedback- observation and evaluation - Lakshmi, Shanthi, Vishnupriya, representatives of participant projects

Note the sessions would most likely remain as stated above. However the teachers taking the session may change depending on the availability of the concerned individuals.

We intend to cover the following teachers in these programs,

1.       2 teachers from the TEA trust supported Balwadis.

2.       1 teacher from the Urur Kuppam (Elliot’s Beach) Balwadi.

3.       2 teachers for the Urur Kuppam (Elliot’s Beach) Balwadi. (can choose one)

4.       3 teachers from Rishiyur and Vilakudi Balwadis.

5.       Possibly 1 teacher from Balwadi SWC of the Theosophical Society

6.       6 teachers for the TEA trust Primary schools.( can choose 4)

7.       4 teachers from Rishiyur Primary school.

8.       Possibly upto 3 more teachers from Rishiyur and Vilakudi primary schools.

9.       Possibly upto 2 teachers from Urur Kuppam school

10.   Possibly upto 2 teachers from Seva Chakra

Project Goals:

Note this project is not working in isolation. While the training in itself would have value, it true value is fully realized with the execution of the full project the affected teachers are a part of. For instance at the Urur Kuppam Balwadi, we would be training one Government teacher and one teacher we hope to hire for the project. However the salary for the teacher we hire at this Balwadi is clearly not part of the fund requirement for this project. That would be part of the Elliot Beach Balwadi Improvement project.

The project would impact the teachers identified earlier and through them impact the students from these various projects. We hope to see the following qualitative improvements in the teachers due to this project,

  1. A motivated and trained group of teachers that cater to the needs of the children.
  2. A teacher with ability to effectively use the materials we intend to provide the Balwadi’s and primary schools.
  3. A teacher who can back to discuss what works, what does not in her environment

Fund Requirement/Schedule Summary

Note this is a proposal for utilizing funds that have already been earmarked for teacher training program. The project intends to group together expenses that have currently been requested for other projects of Asha-Chennai and would consequently lower the estimates for these projects.

Total Funding required for Teacher Training in May = Rs 46,500 = US $1000.

This is money is required by May of 2003. However since the money is already in transit, Asha-Chennai would allocate the money for this project from its funds and replenish the funds when the $1000 clears.

 * Further phases of training can happen if the participant projects have been approved and from the funds allocated for the purpose of teacher training under these projects.
