Right Start Teacher Training Program

Proposal for 2014.

The RightStart teacher training intiative is an important component of Asha Chennai’s work with the government schools. Under the RightStart program we train the teachers hired by us for various government school and Balwadi projects. Additionally we also provide training to teachers of other organisations that work with Asha Chennai.

Objectives of the Project

To provide opportunities for teachers in Asha projects and in other schools (who want to participate), Asha volunteers who wish to be involved with helping children learn

To get acquainted with the developmental aspects of children and relate their teaching strategies to them,

To share their classroom experiences,

To create/locate new learning teaching materials to make learning a increasingly student centred process

To evolve meaningful ways of assessment- non threatening, creative, child friendly and suited to helping the teachers themselves to decide on areas for re-teaching and remediation

To learn the above through interactions facilitated from experts and experienced teachers

Participants

The following participants have confirmed participation in the training sessions.

Project Sangamam, Asha Chennai: 15 teachers and 1 coordinator.

Project Pearl, Asha Chennai: 1 teacher.

Project Manigal, Asha Chennai: 1 teacher

Project Poorna Vidhya, Asha Chennai: 1 teacher.

Olcott Memorial School: 4 teachers.

Pudhiyadhor (NGO): 5 teachers.

In addition Vanavani itself is likely to send one teacher to observe the sessions.

Plan for RightStart 2014

The primary focus of RightStart 2014 is to train the teachers from our own government school projects. The two important areas of weakness that require training are in teaching English and Maths. These are going to be primary focus for the RightStart project this year.

Venue for RightStart 2014

We will be hosting RightStart 2014 at IIT Madras campus. It is easy to organize it there since hostel, food and location for the training is all available at the same location. Here are the details.

• Accomodation for the outstation teachers will be at the IIT hostels. The specific hostel will be decided by IIT. IIT has arrangement with a vendor for renting bedding etc. at the hostels. We will use the same facility.
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner for the outstation participants will be at the hostel mess. We will also get just the lunch for the local participants at the same mess. If the numbers change day to day some of the extra people may have to get lunch ordered in or go to the canteen at IIT.
• The training classes will be held at Vanavani School. They have given us access to their classrooms for free.
• The Felicitation Function will also be held at the auditorium at Vanavani on 27^th May. This has also been provided to us free of cost.

3	Travel Expenses for Outstation Participants	Rs 4000 * 2 for van rental to and from Thiruvallur Rs 3000 *2 for van rental for local outing for the teachers on two evenings. Rs 1000 * 2 for train tickets for two more outstation participants.	16,000
