Fellowship Mahesh Pandey Lucknow, U.P. A Block 893 Indira Nagar Author; James Minter 09893715347 Indian Mobile 703-395-0689 US Mobile jamesminter@comcast.net Coordinator; Sirish Agarwal sirish_ashadc@hotmail.com Activity; Mahesh has a fellowship to spend 80% of available time on educational issues and project management for Washington Chapter. Status; Mahesh has accomplished a number of activities of high effectiveness. Teacher camps, citizenship education, right to work enforcement, health services facilitation, and project audits. All documented in written and video reports. I will include only a single example: In Hardoi District, Lalpur Block, UP in a government primary school a drunk teacher managed to find his way to the school only to beat students and sleep. 45 students refused to accept this. On their own initiative the the Sub District Educational Officer was cornered. Repeatedly he was told of the drunken beatings. Finally the Officer could take no more. The teacher was docked salary, reprimanded, transfered to a new school ( requiring a major bribe to retain his origional posting). He is now punctual with no alcohol on his breath. The word has spread to other teachers. Such is the true education of the rulers in a democracy. Problem; Mahesh is most effective as an Educational Fellow. Yet he serves as Secretary of Asha Trust, giving direct responsibility for Audit Review, Data Collection, Government Audits, (Multiple trips to Delhi, Varanasi) and personally overseas each voucher request for approval in Asha Trust. The result is that he has spent not 20% of his time but 60% of his time on administrative activities. Both Dr. Pandey and Mahesh confirm this. (Note from Sirish: Mahesh informed us in Dec 2005 that due to the unexpected audit of Asha accounts he will spend a lot of his time during months of December 2005 to March 2006 on the audit. This was reported in Dec 2005 progress report submitted to Asha DC as well.) Conclusion/Recommendation; The only solution is a seperate person. At 20% of his time Mahesh could effective manage clerical work to replace his efforts. This must happen to eliminate his current 60 hour work weeks. Mahesh is currently trying to do two jobs. The likely effect is that he will burn out and we will lose one of our most valuable assets in Lucknow. Washington Chapter is responsible for oversight. We must prevent this. Comments; Educational Material Review; Eklayva; Highly structured primary educational material. Text are student friendly with hands on examples. Text are highly focused subject based and excellent for students of highly variable background. They are best used for students with 1-2 years of exposure to an educational enviroment. Abacu; Well built flip chart system, highly visual. The only alternative system I have seen for children just being introduced to the educational school system. Tribals, slums, scheduled caste, all are best target groups. Charts are single issue based, i.e. "The individual in the universe" and can easily be covered in a single session.
