Deaf Aid society Organization Details

About the Organization:

The Deaf Aid Society, Bangalore is a registered NGO with FCRA clearance founded in 1967. The Society runs the Sheila Kothavala Institute for the Deaf (SKID). SKID provides schooling for about 200 hearing impaired children from nursery to SSLC (Karnataka 10th Standard State Board). The curriculum also includes special subjects like auditory training and speech therapy. There are about 20 teachers, all qualified in Deaf Education. The aim of the Institute is to provide specialized schooling and vocational training to enable the students to become independent and productive.

Most of the children come from very poor backgrounds where the parents do not have the resources for schooling and hearing aids. The Society is constantly endeavoring to provide the best possible facilities to the children to enable them to develop not only in academic areas but also in vocational areas. They expose the children to tailoring, working in a printing press, making of pottery, and have a recently added computer section. Several alumni of the Institute have gone on to earn their degrees from regular colleges and found jobs. The Institute also runs a recognized Teacher Training Course.
