ANNUAL REPORT, 2000–2001
Dear Members,
It is my proud privilege to welcome you
all at the 11th Annual General Body Meeting of CHETANAA.
CHETANAA
has completed eleven years of its existence and we feel happy and
satisfied when we look at the steady progress the organization has made
since its conception. Of course, a lot more remains to be
done.
CHETANAA started with merely 20 children and today, about 160
children study in CHETANAA from nursery to class X. These children
regularly attend Govt. schools and come to CHETANAA in after school hours.
Besides giving formal education, they are taught importance of sanitation,
cleanliness, morality and good manners. CHETANAA has employed four
teachers who teach different classes. It is a matter of pleasure and pride
for CHETANAA that its first batch of X class appeared for the annual
examination conducted by Haryana Education Board.
Some of the
activities of CHETANAA during the year 2000-2001 are as follows:
1.
In April 2000, text Books were given to all the children, which cost
Rs.12000/- approx.
2. School dresses costing Rs.18000/- approx.
were given to all the children.
3. Boys and 6 girls, who passed
VIII class board examination, were admitted IX class- Boys go to Senior
Secondary School and girls go to Govt. Girls School in the City.
4.
Four students were promoted to X class from IX class. One student who got
compartment in Science and Maths cleared the compartment exam in September
2000.
5. Independence Day was celebrated on Aug. 15, 2000. Children
sang patriotic songs. Ms. Chandra Kanta, Lecturer in Govt. Girls College,
Sonepat was the Chief Guest. She hoisted the National Flag and gave a very
encouraging speech. Ms. Chandra Kanta is blind by birth and her life is
full of struggle. She is a source great inspiration for our children. She
also donated a small amount towards CHETANAA. Children were impressed and
touched by her gesture.
6. Children’s Day was celebrated on Nov.
14, 2000. Sweaters of school dress were given to 60 students. A sum of
Rs.7,000/- approx. was spent for this purpose.
7. Republic day was
celebrated on Jan. 26, 2001. A poetry recitation competition, quiz contest
and debate were organized. Almost all the children participated in one or
the other competition. Dr. S.P. Singh, Professor Emeritus, Kurukshetra
University, Kurukshetra was the chief guest and Prof. R.K. Tondon presided
over the function. Children also presented cultural program. Prof. Singh
donated Rs.1100/- for CHETANAA and gave away prizes to children standing
I, II & III in different competitions. Video recording of the entire
programme was also done. An edited copy of this will also be sent to ASHA
Seattle U.S.
8. Educational cum recreational trip of senior classes
(III to X class) was taken to Chandigarh on Dec. 9, 2000. Earlier also
these children had gone to Chandigarh and visited many sight seeing
places. This time they visited artificial limb factory and saw how these
limbs are manufactured and fixed. They also met some handicapped persons
using these limbs. Children also visited office and Press of popular
Newspaper ‘The Tribune`. On their way back, they visited Mansa Devi
Temple. We are thankful to the managers of Artificial Limb Factory &
The Tribune who entertained our children & served them refreshment. We
are also thankful to Mr. Ashok Kumar, Senior Lecturer, D.A.V. College,
Chandigarh and Mrs. Mamta Garg, Joint Director, Welfare Department Haryana
Govt., who brought sweets for children & organized the trip. Dr.
Sharda Kumari & Mrs. Varsha Razdan accompanied the tour.
9.
Children of Nursery, I & II classes were taken to mini zoo, Pipli.
They enjoyed watching different animals. They were also given fruits and
sweets and they played in the lawns of the zoo.
10.This year all
the children were vaccinated against Hepatitis B which consisted of three
doses, first on September 17, 2000, second on October 22, 2000 and last on
March 25, 2001. We got the vaccines on subsidized rates through Rotary
Club. We are thankful to members of Rotary Club- Dr. R. Bhardwaj, Dr. O.
P. Lalit, Dr. Surinder Sahai, Dr. N. P. Gupta (President Rotary Club.),
Dr. R. K. Baweja (Secretary) & Mr. Sukumar Chopra, who very kindly
accepted our request to come to CHETANAA, and vaccinated all the children.
We are thankful to our member lady doctor- Mrs. S. Mangwana who took the
initiative and made all the necessary arrangements. We are grateful to
members of ASHA Seattle especially Dr. Jayshree Janardhan and Dr. Dinesh
Batra who made the funds available for this purpose.
11.This year
we are also having regular medical check up of CHETANAA children. A health
care project was submitted to ASHA Seattle in this regard. We are happy to
inform that this project has also been funded by ASHA and a cheque of
$1300 was received- $700 for Hepatitis B and $600 for Health Care project.
This is in addition to $1000 annual grant, which we receive from ASHA. We
are grateful to members of ASHA for their help, interest and cooperation,
which makes the things much easier for us.
12.The first complete
medical check up of CHETANAA children was done on March 04, 2001. It was
done by the members of Rotary Club Kurukshetra. A team of nine medical
doctors of different specialization and six officials of Rotary Club
visited CHETANAA. All the children got their blood tested for Hemoglobin
and blood Group. They had thorough dental check up, Eye test & other
examination. Many children are anemic & some have other disorders.
They were given medicines. Their parents were also contacted and
directions were given to them about the treatment their children require.
We are thankful to Mr. Jitender Dhingra, President Rotary Club
Kurukshetra, Dr.R.K.Baweja, Secretary Rotary Club, Mr. Ajay Madan, Mr.
Sukumar Chopra, Dr. Girish Chopra, Mr. Rajnesh Wadhwa & Mr. Sanjeev
Wadhwa for coming to CHETANAA and helping in organizing this Health Care
program. We are thankful to Dr. S. Sahai, Dr. Vijay Sharma, Dr. R.K.
Bhardwaj, Dr.P.K.Soni, Dr. Rakesh Arora, Dr. Surinder Mehta, Dr.Munesh
Kukreja and Dr. N. P. Gupta for examining all the children and prescribing
medicines and tonics etc. We are thankful to members of Rotary Club for
donating Rs. 8000/- for this health care program. We are very grateful to
Dr. R. K. Sangwan, owner of Vikas Laboratory who was kind enough to send
his technician for testing the blood samples of all the children free of
cost. We are very thankful to Mr. Rakesh for testing the blood samples
very carefully & handling the children with great patience and
affection. We are thankful to our member- Dr. Anita Dua, lecturer in
Biochemistry, for helping Mr. Rakesh in testing the blood sample. We are
highly thankful to our founder member- Lady doctor Mrs. S.Mangwana, the
spirit behind this health care programme for contacting members of Rotary
Club and making this programme a success. We are also thankful to our
president Dr. Sharda Kumari for purchasing all the necessary items for
this health care project and organizing this program. A sum of Rs.4500/-
was spent for the equipment required.
13.Dr.Siva from ASHA Seattle
U.S. visited CHETANAA on July 1,2000 & had on informal chat with
members, teachers and children of CHETANAA. He suggested that we should
provide Newspaper to Children so that they have better general awareness
and develop a habit of reading Newspaper. We started taking two Hindi News
papers. From July 2000.
14.Dr. Dinesh & his wife Neema &
Children Neha & Rohan from ASHA, U.S. visited CHETANAA on October 15,
2000. Children of CHETANAA presented a cultural programme in their honor.
Dr. Dinesh also had an informal discussion with members, teacher &
children of CHETANAA. He also saw the adjacent plot CHETANAA is planning
to purchase. CHETANAA is facing some technical problems, hopefully these
will be resolved and we will be able to make the deal. We plan to use this
area for constructing toilets, septic tank and two rooms. One will be used
as computer lab and the other as Library cum reading room.
15. As
suggested by ASHA, we have also sent annual subscription for some Hindi
weekly and fortnightly magazines and have purchased few more educational
storybooks for children. Dr. Jayshree informed that ASHA Seattle plans to
send $100 for this purpose to all its projects.
16. We have
purchased three table and 14 chairs to be used by Children in the reading
room where they can read magazines, Newspaper and other books.
17.
Two toilets have been constructed in the main building of CHETANAA costing
Rs.40000/-. At present, we have used funds from other budget heads of
CHETANAA and are expecting that we will get funds from ASHA for this
purpose.
18. The results of different classes were declared on
March 31, 2001. The pass percentage of different classes and the names of
position holders are as given below: Class I-87%, Class II-90%, Class
III-90%, Class IV-90%, Class V-100%, Class VI-92.3%, Class VII-100%, Class
IX-80%, Class VIII & X- Result will be declared by Haryana Education
Board in the last week of June.

19.Annual prize distribution function was held on April 6,
2001. Dr.(Mrs.) K.K.Jain, Principal, Girls College- Pundari, was the Chief
Guest. She gave away the prizes to the position holders in different
classes. Incentives were also given to the teachers of CHETANAA. Sweets
were also distributed.
20.This year Mr. Raj Kumar Garg joined
CHETANAA and he is teaching Students of VIII and IX class. He also gave
special coaching to six children of class V, who appeared for entrance
test for Novadaya School. One of our lady teachers Miss Geeta got married
and we have to look for her substitute.
21.Election: A meeting of
CHETANAA was held on March 13, 2001 to elect new Office bearers. As
resolved earlier, Dr. Sharda Kumari will continue as the President. Dr.
Suman Gupta was elected as Secretary, Dr. Nisha Garg as Vice President,
Dr. Varsha Rajdan will continue as Treasurer.
22.During the
financial year 2000-2001, Rs.1,73,629 were received as donations. Total
expenditure was Rs.2,02,444. We have overspent this year and some money
from the corpus fund was used.
The success of CHETANAA is reflected
in the people’s enthusiasm to support our efforts. I am proud to say that
more and more philanthropists are coming forward to sponsor bright and
deserving Students. Now we have sponsorship of 18 children. We are
thankful to Er. Sachin Gupta, Dr. Dinesh Batra, Dr. Ruchir Puri, Er.
Ashish Taneja, Mrs. Usha Aggarwal, Dr. O.P.Lalit, Mr. Amar Nath, Mr.
Ashish, Mrs. Sushma Arora, Dr. Jyotsana, Er. Anurag & Ms. Sangeeta for
sponsoring the education of some of CHETANAA children.
We express a
deep sense of gratitude towards Dr. Dinesh Batra and Dr. Jayshree
Janardhan, coordinator ASHA, Seattle for taking keen interest in the
activities of CHETANAA and for continued financial support for CHETANAA’s
projects. ASHA is a social organization run by NRI in U.S.A, devoted
towards educating poor children in India. We are happy to inform that Ms.
Anju Anand, a volunteer of ASHA, will also be looking after the CHETANAA’s
projects. She is an alumni of Regional Engineering College,
Kurukshetra.
We express our sincere thanks and gratitude to Mr.
Roshan Lal Mittal, D.M. Haryana Agro Fort and Chemical Industries, Sirsa,
for maintaining the account of CHETANAA and extending full cooperation at
all times. We also thank Mr. Rakesh Dhull, Chartered Accountant, for
auditing the accounts of CHETANAA. We are highly thankful to Mr. Ashok
Gupta- owner of Civil & Military educational Stores Chandigarh, for
providing stationary for CHETANAA. We are also grateful to Mr. Rajesh
Narwal (Steno) Dept. of Statistics & O.R. for doing all the typing
work and Mr. Vijay Gupta, Library Attendant, Dept. of Mathematics for
preparing the library record of CHETANAA. Our thanks are also due to Mr.
Shekhar Thapa, Clerk- Dept. Of Statistics and O. R. for preparing the
stock register of CHETANAA. We are also obliged to Mr.PalaRam, helper,
Electricity Dept., Kurukshetra University, for maintaining the electricity
fittings of CHETANAA. Our heartfelt thanks are for all those who have
donated either in cash or kind, directly or indirectly towards CHETANAA.
We assure our donors that each penny of their donation is being rightly
utilized.
CHETANAA has become a people’s programme. Years of
persuasion have made the parents of these children realize that school
education is the foundation of a good future for their child. We hope our
sincere efforts will definitely fill our children’s life with light and
hope.
