Safety Concern Project

Report

(September to December 15, 2001)

1. At first, a proposal was prepared regarding need of spreading awareness about safety concerns and instituting a resource center in Vidya Bhawan for the same.

2. Documents related to above mentioned subject were studied in September and October, 2001.

3. Discussions and talks were carried out with persons from different fields.

4. From hospitals information was collected about accidents that commonly occur and an attempt was to made to prepare a plan regarding how children can do this work.

5. A list of potential audiences for safety education was prepared.

6. A list was prepared of activities carried out with the students in school.

7. Different programmes were thought for pre primary (till years' age group) Primary (5 to 10 years age group) Middle (11 to 16 years) and more than 16 years age group.

8. Programmes possible at the level of teachers, heads of institutions, guardians, Hospital, Community, Traffic Police were also discussed.

9. A meeting in Vidya Bhawan Society was concerned on 20.11.2001 to start work in this direction in 10 organizations of Vidya Bhawan working in various fields. 11 members were present in this meeting. Dr. Hriday Kant Dewan, while giving information about Safety Concern Resource Center in Vidya Bhawan mentioned that for this project GTZ organization has approved financial assistance following points emerged from the discussion on how various organizations of Vidya Bhawan can perform meaningful role in this.

(1) For safety concern awareness a work plan for following areas can be developed :

a) Road Safety area

b) Industrial area

c) domestic area

(2) Rather than giving only didactic directives, comments or theoretical information; Practical awareness/vigilance should be developed in various sections of the society through mass awareness, small research, surveys, workshops etc.

(3) Following works can be carried out in all three schools of Vidya Bhawan Senior Secondary School; Secondary School, Jhamarkotra and Senior Secondary School, Ramgiri.

(a) Students would analyse the types and reasons of accidents after collecting statistics regarding accidents from hospital and Primary Health center. They would list down physical, psychological and economic facts related to these.

(b) Assess people's traffic behaviour at crossroads. What types of behavior are main factors behind accidents and how awakening concern is possible?

(c) Communicate above thoughts to the student community through various competitions, debate, drawing, essay writing and play presentations.

(d) Many a times adolescent students disobey traffic roles while speeding the vehicle. Therefore raising concern awareness in group is expected. Newspaper cuttings related to accidents should be exhibited. Over the time, other schools of the city should also be included in above tasks.

(4) A fixed syllables structure should be decided in Vidya Bhawan Higher Education and Training Institute, by which trainee teachers would be trained in this regard.

(5) Practical training regarding accident prevention and information on safety roles should be given to women, professionals, common public and People's representatives in Panchayati Raj Institution.

(6) Workshops should be conducted for employees of vehicle sellers and institutions which give registration/license so that they can become partners in above awareness raising.

(7) Safety models should be developed in schools.

(8) Dr. Kirti was entrusted with the responsibility of collecting information from hospitals and training students for data collection through an assessment scale developed for this purpose.

10. A meeting was planned again on 1.12.2001 at Central meting room of Vidya Bhawan Society regarding Safety Concern Resource Centre Project. Seven members of different organizations took part in this meeting, following points emerged from discussion:-

(1) Dr. (Smt.) V.V. Singh will translate Safety Concern Resource Centre related proposal into Hindi. After that its copies will be sent to teachers of all three schools.

(2) Workshops will be organised in all three schools by Shri Rakesh Saxena and Dr. (Smt.) V.V. Singh on 6th, 10th and 11th December 2001, for ensuring teacher's participation in this program and making them fully aware in this regard so that awareness can be developed in students.

(3) Accident related facts from Newspapers should be complied by students. Information should also be collected about accidents occuring in their surroundings, family, village, colonies, city.

(4) Case studies of accident victims should be done.

(5) Accident related information should be collected from hospitals. Tools created for this purpose should be filled.

(6) Material for awareness generation about traffic roles should be prepared and exhibited.

(7) All three-schools should make action plans at their level.

 

11. Organising Workshops :

(1) Vidya Bhawan Senior Secondary School :-

Safety concern workshop was organised for 41 school teachers on 6.12.2001. After giving preliminary information regarding Safety Concern teachers were divided into 6 groups by saying 1,2,3,4,5,6. In 20 minutes they wrote on the topic "how many types of accidents occur". Each group presented the same afterwards.

(b) 6 slips were made regarding various accidents and each group got one slip by lottery method, which they presented by acting it out. All presentations were interesting. Themes for acting by teachers were as follows :-

(i) Road accident

(ii) Drawing

(iii) Air Crash

(iv) Train Accident

(v) Animal biting

(vi) Domestic Accident (Fir, Gas, Electrical)

(c) Participants shared their views on the factors responsible for the accidents enacted and preventive measures which could have been taken to avoid the same.

(d) While presenting his views Principal Sh. Rakesh Saxena mentioned that a person's life gets greatly affected by any accident. Somebody loses his/her life or capacity to work is lost or reduced. Accidents cause long term social, psychological and emotional effects. Therefore it is necessary to create awareness regarding causes of accidents and precautions that can be taken in this regard. Especially in children sensitivity from this view point has to be developed.

(e) Once again everybody listed down causes to accidents and preventive measures in their respective groups.

(f) Some suggestions were given regarding what activities can be carried out for students in their schools. It was decided that a detailed 'Action Plan' will be prepared.

(2) Vidya Bhawan Secondary School, Jhamar Kotra :-

 

(a) A workshop was organised for 20 school teachers on 10.12.2001. After being informed about objectives of Safety Concern Workshop, participants were divided in four groups. Everybody wrote about "How many type of accidents commonly occur" and presented it.

(b) 4 different situations mentioned below were written on different slips and each group picked up one slip and enacted the situation.

(i) Road accident (involving a motor car and a motorcycle.)

(ii) Accident due to fire.

(iii) Accident due to electrical appliance.

(iv) Accident in mine/factory.

Each of the four groups made an effort to present the scenes in very natural manner.

(c) After the enacted presentations, once again listing was done of points emerging from group discussion regarding causes of accidents and precautions that can be adopted for prevention.

(d) Participants expressed their views on how students can be involved in safety related awareness programme, why it is necessary to develop such kind of concern.

(e) A detailed Action Plan in this regard will be prepared at school level and send to the Resource Center.

(3) Vidya Bhawan Secondary School, Ramgiri :-

A workshop was organised for 25 school teachers on 11.12.2001.

(a) In four groups teachers listed down accidents after discussion among themselves.

(b) Following situations were presented through acting by each group after picking up slips by lottery method.

(i) Accident at School/workshop

(ii) Accident due to electrical appliance

(iii) Accident due to fire

(iv) Road accident.

After watching presentations, participants expressed their views about causes of above mentioned accidents.

(c) each group discussed and wrote about common causes of accidents and what precautions should be adopted in this regard.

(d) Dr. Hridaykant Dewan, while expressing the essence, mentioned "Many a times accidents occur due to our common negligence. In many houses while using electrical appliances, simply wires are joined without using plugs. Such negligence can become the cause of big accidents. We also have to see social, psychological and emotional consequences of accidents. Safety awareness is need of the hour.

(e) School Principal Shri Jai Kishan Rebari informed that efforts have also been taken earlier and time and again to inform students about traffic safety rules by the school in rural setting. Now various activities will be included in school calendar after making an Action Plan for developing concern in this regard in students and community.

12. Activities related with Safety Concern :-

(a) On 3rd, 4th and 5th, December, 2001; the students of class 3,4 and 5 of Vidya Bhawan Junior School were asked in class to write about accidents which might have happened to them or witnessed or heard about by them. In the duration of one period children wrote mostly about accidents which had happened to them or which they directly witnessed and few children wrote about accidents which they had heard about. Some children also wrote more than one incidents. Compositions of around 125 children could thus be compiled.

(b) Accident related news published in daily newspapers was collected in all three schools. News will be arranged in chronological order in future. News of each of the different types of accidents such as aeroplane accidents. Rail accidents, road accidents (related to bus, car, two wheelers), fire related accidents or drowning will be collected by different class and will be exhibited through charts.

(c) A survey was conducted by approximately 150 students of class 9 and 10 of Vidya Bhawan School, Jhamarkotra; in which accidents occurring in rural areas were listed. Based on the information received, accidents were classified in 3 groups.

(1) Domestic accidents

(2) Accidents in fields or barn

(3) Other types of accidents.

(d) Students were given information regarding Safety in Vidya Bhawan School, Ramgiri. Books and rules regarding this were collected.

Various programmes, activities are to be organised in near future according to many plans.
