SLADS (Singhbhum Legal Aid and Development Society), Bihar
The project funds an existing high school over 3 years. The school draws children from
the Salboni area, targetting 70 girls and 80 boys. The project area is populated mostly
by poor tribals and economically backward communities. Though there are 20 primary schools
in the area, SLADS is the only high school running there covering 50 villages. Due to a
serious financial crisis, the Bihar government has expressed an inability to fund the
secondary education facilities.
Asha, MIT has been funding the project annually with $2380 for the past 2 years. The
funding is for salary of teaching staff and training, books for a library, apparatus for
a laboratory, and furniture. The project has been visited by an Asha, MIT contact,
Mr. P.P. Krishnan and recently by Joydeep, a volunteer with Asha, MIT.
